What is the difference between green, black, white and herbal teas?
Green, black and white teas all come from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant. Depending on how the tea leaves are processed after harvest, different types of teas will be produced. To make green tea, we pan-fry or steam the leaves immediately after harvest. This preserves the fresh color and taste of green tea. The key characteristic of white tea is its lack of processing: it is made from very young, minimally processed tea leaves. Black tea gets its rich, strong flavor through the oxidation process after harvest.
Herbal teas, on the other hand, contain no Camellia sinensis leaves. These teas are naturally caffeine free because they contain no actual tea leaves. Instead, their flavor comes from botanicals, herbs and spices.
What is Ojay Greene doing to make sure that human rights are respected?
We started Ojay Greene with the mission of providing opportunities for female farmers in Siaya County, Kenya. We believe that supporting self-identifying women and minority groups is the best way to even the playing field and make the global economy more inclusive.
The majority of all profits from tea sales go directly to our farmers and their families. We even work with our farmers to create community savings funds to invest in their retirement or the education of their children - our future. To learn more about what we believe and who we are, visit our Impact page.
What is Ojay Greene doing about climate change?
In Kenya, we are not aloof to the fragility of our ecosystem or the risks posed by climate change. We know that we need to be prepared for the challenges that the future may hold for our environment and our children. We employ smart, technology-enabled farming practices to help preserve our world for future generations to come.
Where do your ingredients come from?
Ojay Greene is committed to empowering female farmers in Siaya County. As a result, we source all of our ingredients locally in Siaya County, Kenya.
Where can I find a full list of ingredients and information about allergens?
We use simple, natural ingredients to make delicious cups of tea that remind you of home. Most of our teas contain lemongrass, mint, hibiscus, cardamom and Kenyan black tea leaves. You can find a full list of ingredients for each tea type on the product page.

Are your teas organic?
Yes! All of the teas offered on our website are organic. We hope you enjoy the all-natural flavors.
Do your teas contain flavoring? What is the difference between artificial and natural flavoring?
Contrary to popular belief, natural and artificial flavorings actually have a lot in common. Oftentimes these two flavorings have the same chemical composition; the difference lies in how they are produced. Natural flavorings come from natural sources: essential oils, essences, extracts, etc. When a flavor doesn’t come from 100% natural sources, even if the majority of its composition is natural, we label this flavor “artificial”. However, artificial flavorings are just as safe to drink as natural flavorings.
How much caffeine is there in a cup of tea?
It’s always difficult to say for sure, because a variety of factors can change just how much caffeine is in a single cup of tea. Steeping time and water temperature play a large role in caffeine content. In general, research shows that one, eight-ounce cup of tea contains between 20-30 mg of caffeine. Herbal teas, however, are caffeine free.
Can I drink your tea while pregnant or breastfeeding?
For all health-related questions, we recommend speaking to your doctor. All of our teas come with detailed ingredients lists that you can show to your doctor in the case of any questions or concerns.
Does tea expire?
Tea does not expire. However, like most things, tea will lose freshness and flavor over time. To keep teas as fresh as possible, keep them well sealed and store in a cool, dry, dark place.
How long do your teas stay fresh and how should I store it?
This depends greatly on the type of tea. As a general rule of thumb, teas with larger chunks of chocolate, nuts, or fruits will not last as long as other, more traditional teas. Teas with fruits, nuts and chocolate last around 6 months after the date of purchase, whereas more traditional teas can last up to one year. To retain the freshness of the teas for as long as possible, we recommend that you store your teas in a cool, dry and dark place. Your tea should always be kept well sealed.
I’ve heard that I shouldn’t add milk to teas that contain hibiscus. Is this true?
That’s correct; we don’t recommend adding milk to teas with hibiscus. Hibiscus is very acidic, so it will cause the milk to curdle.
Can I reuse my tea bags?
We don’t recommend reusing your tea bags. Our teas are filled with just enough delicious flavors and fresh ingredients to last a single use.
Can I cold brew loose leaf tea?
Our teas were not developed for cold brewing, so we recommend sticking to the hot water step.
How much tea do I have to drink to get full antioxidant benefits?
Our teas are packed with lots of health-promoting compounds. Outside research suggests that peak antioxidant levels can be reached by drinking 4-5 cups of tea per day.
What are the benefits of hot brewed tea?
Tea is a delicious way to maintain both health and hydration. Tea without added milk or sugar is 99.5% water, so it’s a great way to make sure you’re meeting your recommended fluid intake for the day. Some research even suggests that tea boosts your immune system and helps to protect your bones.
